07.07.07 Saptapadi

'Saptapadi' or seven steps are what the couple takes together, the bride's saree and the groom's dhoti are tied together at one end in a knot. Saptapadi starts with Groom stepping with his Right leg to North side or East side of 'Agnihotram' along with Bride. During this ceremony, saris, ornaments and other gifts are offered to the couple and to other family members. The meaning behind this traditional culture is :

1Together we will share the responsibilities of home and children

2Together we will develop mental, physical and spiritual strength

3Together we will prosper and share our worldly goods

4Together we will fill over hearts with great joy, peace and happiness

5Together we will raise strong and virtuous children

6Together we will remain faithful, lifelong partners.

7Together we will cherish each other and our families in sorrow and happiness.
Number ‘7’ is very important in Indian numerology. It is also given much importance in China and Western countries as well. Seven is a cosmic number related to the seven planets, seven days of the week, seven colours, and seven notes on the musical scale.

07-07-07 comes once in a century, and the date is said to be extremely auspicious for couples to marry. This year it falls on Saptami, which makes it even more auspicious for marriages. In Andhra Pradesh it is Bahula Saptami tithi under the Uttara Bhadra star. These and the fact that it is a Saturday make the day all the more auspicious for marriages.

The number has significance in Hindu mythology, especially when it comes to marriage. We have sapthapadi (seven rounds of the holy fire) during the wedding ceremony, then the couple takes seven vows, and married women pray that they remain with their spouses for the next seven lives.
